A Day in the Life of an Arctic Farmer is a complete, 7-hour day “tour” where you can see what goes on behind the scenes for yourself in real-time. First, your day will begin with a presentation from one of our experienced staff to get you up to speed on Permaculture. From there, you’ll learn: the ethics and principles behind growing fresh food, learn what Circular Economy is, spend time with worms and working with quails, find out the steps and techniques involved with planting (and sowing seeds) plus composting, and even what’s involved when delivering fresh food to hotels and restaurants…and just about everything else in between!

 

Besides this extraordinary real-life experience, you’ll enjoy a tasty lunch with fellow Arctic farmers, and get access to just about everything including the main lab, dome, workshop and gift shop as well.

 

At the conclusion of the 7-hour learning experience, you’ll be rewarded with your very own completion certificate, so you can be part of a very exclusive club!

Unique, brilliant, unforgettable

If you are fortunate enough to travel to Longyearbyen, you will undoubtedly have a few memorable experiences. None, however, are likely to be as inspiring and life-altering as the passion project of Benjamin Vidmar and his team. We are very lucky to have made a new friend, someone else who values innovation in seeking solutions to real-world problems. Given that Longyearbyen is the world's northernmost city, with a history of frontier survival, almost everything that is eaten on the island is imported from mainland Europe or elsewhere by boat/plane. Benjamin, who has worked as a superb chef in the excellent restaurants of Svalbard (amongst other locations around the world), settled in Longyearbyen and decided that enough was enough. He has spent time, money, energy, and poured blood, sweat, and tears into creating the first and only permaculture infrastructure on the island of Spitsbergen. Taking a tour, which is very reasonably priced, will allow one to see first-hand what he and his colleagues have been able to accomplish in a short period of time -- growing micro-greens, herbs, vegetables; creating compost and a worm colony to cultivate soil; maintaining a small batch of quails which will produce eggs and also fertiliser for the garden; and the pièce-de-résistance, Benjamin's greenhouse, a mini-geodesic dome built into the permafrost on solid concrete, with internal heating, insulation, and water container. It has to be seen to be believed. Here, in one of the most remote places on earth, this team of dreamers and miracle workers has created the world's first truly Arctic garden, and it is something to behold. While it may look humble at the moment, and perhaps seem unimpressive by the standards of the massive hydroponic gardens of many places much further south, this entire project is nothing short of astounding. Someone as dedicated, bright, and environmentally conscious as Benjamin is rare to find in this world of ours, and I strongly recommend that all visitors to the island make use of a trip to his facility to understand what it will take to sustain food and a human diet in even the most extreme conditions. The future of humankind depends on people like Benjamin and his team; this is no more and no less than a glimpse into the best that humanity has to offer. We can't wait to learn more about developments at Polar Permaculture, from afar, and anticipate our next trip to see things evolve in the coming year.
